Hi Wohnsiedlerj,
The XPS 420 may emit a series of beeps during start-up if the monitor cannot display errors or problems. This series of beeps, called a beep code, identifies a problem. For example, beep code 1-3-1 (one possible beep code) consists of one beep, a burst of three beeps, and then one beep. This beep code tells you that the computer encountered a memory problem.
Reseating the memory modules may correct the error.
You can access the Dell XPS 420 manual by clicking on the link below. There is detailed information on the list of beep codes as well as steps for reseating the memory on your computer. Please open the system chassis only if you are comfortable doing so yourself.
Before you begin removing the system cover, please follow the precautionary steps mentioned below:
- Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from getting scratched.
- Turn off your computer (see "Turning Off Your Computer" on page 99 of the Owner's Manual).
- NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug it from the network wall jack.
- Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer.
- Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets, and then press the power button to ground the system board.
Let me know if further help is needed.
Thanks and regards,
Babita S
