Hard Disk problem

I have a Dell XPS 630i with what I believe is a failing hard drive:

Symptoms:

1. Event viewer system Warning message:   An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

2. the drive is near capacity and when I free up space (e.g. like 20GB), it fills within a day or so.  Some of this space fill is due to Norton backup which I've disabled.

3. Ran diagnostics off the Dell support center and all components 'Passed' - except on the Hard Disk diagnostic, I received this message:

Notice Alert Icon
A diagnostic category was specified and the applicable device does not exist.

The drive does show up in 'my computer' etc..  Is it possible that this could be configuration issue rather than a hardware failure (e.g. did something accidently get reconfigured with the hard drive that is causing it to not be recognized...I know enough to be dangerous so this is not entirely out of the realm of impossibility.

other:

I have run disk clean up and defrag numerous times...to no avail.

thanks for any suggestions (including confirming my suspicions that I need a new hard drive).
