Disk beeps under heavy load and IO throughput momentarily halts

I have an XPS One 2710

When the disk drive is busy, I hear an intermittent beeping sound.  When this happens, I notice in Task Manager that IO throughput pauses for 1/2 second or so when the beep occurs.

Does anyone know what might be causing this?
