I would like to inform you that it should depend on the software that you use to transfer the data from Firewire. If the software has an option to change the default location for saving photos/videos to preferred location then it won't be an issue.
As a suggestion before purchasing a USB external drive you can borrow it from a friend to check it works as desired and then you can make the buying decision.
