Thanks for the reply. I agree, that is what it appears to be. I did install Windows XP on the 790 and it exhibits the same behavior which confirms with near certainty. Obviously it would be good to go the software vendor and see what they could figure out, but since it's unsupported legacy software, it's not an option. I'm surprised that if it is a chipset issue, the usb-to-serial adapter doesn't work. It really has to be a deep-seated design thing that even affects the USB ports. I'm currently trying to use some serial port monitoring software (Sysinternals Portmon) to see if I can glean any useful information.
