Thank you for your reply. I installed the version you referenced but it didn't include any drivers/settings for the SATA controller. I also tried the latest version on the Intel web site, version 9.4.0.1017.
Both have the same result that the eSata drive is detected when the drive is attached but as soon as I try to do anything with the drive it locks up. If I use the USB connection on the drive it is fine.
The latest Intel software installed a driver for the sata controller. See below.

If I look at the controller in Device Manager, initially I see the reference to the Intel version that was installed.

However if I look at driver details, it appears to be using the stock Microsoft msahci Driver that comes with Windows 7 SP1.
