Hello -
thanks for this extra info. We had some success this morning. The old graphics driver had been
cleared out Using Driver Sweeper. First updated Directx using the June 2010 download, then
Set a restore point. Started off by installing driver 197.xx I had got from the Internet.
Rebooted, but once again experienced the black flashing screen - three or four times when the
desktop first appears and then again, when you right click on the Nvidia tray icon.
Uninstalled and reverted to the restore point.
Next, navigated to Windows Update and selected the Nvidia driver that was offered. Installed,
rebooted and it's working perfectly. It's version 163.xx . Why the system works OK with this
old driver, but not with the newer versions (7800GTX support was officially dropped from Nvidia
drivers a few months ago with the 307.xx being the last) seems a mystery.
Did Windows Update offer you an up-to-date driver, or did you end up with an old version,
similar to mine? By the way, thanks for the DSS / USB tip, I'll check that out.
Dave
