Question – Powering up a Dell XPS-8500
Huge THANKS
to MyComputersFaster and others for your help on XP installation. I still have five devices not working. And, I think my USB 3.0 is running at USB 2.0 speed (or even slower); and sometimes my USB memory stick is not detected. But, I can worry about these later. For now, I am a happy camper with my new Dell XPS-8500 running XP and my older XP software.
However, I am a bit worried about the behaviors of my computer upon powering up. That is, with the power cord plugged in, pressing the round power button on the top side of the computer (on the right side when facing the front of the computer) to turn the power on. I have encountered three types of results as follow upon pressing the power button…
(1) The power button/light would turn WHILE immediately. You would hear some noise from the PC immediately (motor running/starting up). The screen would show the Dell-in-a-circle logo shortly after and begin booting XP up. This happened about half of the time.
(2) Nothing happen after the power button is pressed. After a DELAY, the button/light would first turn AMBER, and then WHITE. Then, it’s like the first type mentioned above. However, this DELAY could be anywhere between 2 seconds and 20 seconds. And, this is where I am worried. Is this normal? Would your XPS-8500 act like this, too? This Press-Delay-Amber-While situation also happened about half of the time.
(3) Noting happen, period. This happened only one single time. Upon pressing the power button, absolutely nothing happened for about three minutes. Pressing the power button again or doing ctrl-alt-del on keyboard did not do anything. The computer simply locked up. I had to unplug the power cord and reconnect it after a while. Then, it booted up normally. Again, this has happened one single time only.
Any comments or interpretations would be much appreciated.
