A monitor hub is not a POWERED USB Hub. An External USB 2.0 POWERED Hub with adapter to the wall will work.
When attaching USB 2.0 enumerated Devices to a machine the OS will Shut down the ports when the devices try to draw more than 500ma. Hubs with a 5v 2 AMP adapter have a bit of leeway in this regard.
