Alienware Aurora R3 SLI problem.

Looking for troubleshooting help for my video cards here.

Like a fool I bought an Alienware desktop even though I knew better. I ordered dual GTX 460s and an 875W power supply to power them.

I never attempted to turn on SLI mode until I started modding a few games recently and wanted extra power.

My display crashes after having SLI enabled for a few minutes. The computer stays turned on for a bit but the display cuts out and sometimes the sound get stuck and starts skipping as well.

What I've done:

  • Driver sweeps, updates, and rollbacks.
  • Swapped the cards.
  • Swapped the cables.
  • Clean installation of Windows.
  • Updated BIOS driver.
  • Turned off CPU options in BIOS.

Both cards are detected by device manager and Nvidia control panel. I've also tested the cards individually and they both work fine. It's looking like more and more of a power problem.

However, an 875 watt PSU should be more than enough to power the rig. I have the packing slip from the box the computer shipped in and it explicitly states that I ordered an 875W power supply. I'm about to remove the PSU to physically check the sticker but I don't have much experience with removing and replacing them, especially on a proprietary Alienware like this.

After doing all I can think of, I have come to you, the community.

Has anyone ever experienced a problem with SLI like this or has heard of Dell sending out wrong power supplies?
