XPS 720 Black - replacing power supply

I recently was sent an XPS 720 Black in reasonably good condition. It was a hand-me-down from an active gamer who had bought up recently, and thankfully it fired up right out of the box. Thank goodness because it had been long years since I had done anything important on the inside of a PC. All was well for about a month. At that point I came home to find that it would not power up. For those familiar with the model, when I pressed the power button the array of lights on the front lit for a moment then went dark. Rinse repeat - same outcome. Held in the power button and got a few seconds of light, then darkness again follower by a slightly acrid smell. First guess in the absence of testing equipment was a power supply. (If anyone has better experience and knows different, please clue me in) I purchased a replacement ps from Dell and opened the box to find a "holy crap" scenario of power supply cables snaking throughout the box. Initially I approached the project from a DIY perspective and have been very carefully documenting cable runs, plug mounts, clamps, screw locations and whatnot, but man this is intricate. I suspect/hope that there is a well-traveled reference guide to help the first-time tech in this endeavor. I've tried watching the jiggly YouTube "walk through" vid but am hopeful that there is something a bit less twitchy available? If anyone can link me to a doc/PDF which can help guide the process of power supply replacement, I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks!
