It could be upsetting when the system fails to boot after a power shutdown. The hard drive could have gone bad. However, I suggest you to run the hardware diagnostics and check the components by following the steps provided in the following link:

You will need to reinstall Windows 8 from the installation disk if the test passes or reply to the this post if the test fails with the error message.
