Hi,

After a reboot earlier today, I started having problems booting.  It either just sits with the Dell Logo and spinning dots, or does "preparing automatic repair" then goes to a black screen with a cursor.    I have been tring in vain to run a recovery or boot into safe mode, with no luck.  I upgraded this machine to Windows 10 last year to stop microsoft from pestering me...  I Any suggestions?

Hello so I bought this PC from Dell (XPS 8910)

www.dell.com/.../fdcwvmax113b

I was wondering if I may upgrade the video card. If so what are all the video cards that are compatible with the hardware that is included in the PC as of now. (Have not changed any hardware )

Say if a GTX 1080 were to be compatible , would I need to upgrade the power supply?

Also, say if the GTX 1080 was not compatible, what would be the reason for it? Is it the motherboard? Is it the PSU?

Last question, what motherboard is the my PC? The XPS 8910 that I linked above. Thank-You guys in advance!

Dell T5500 Workstation - problem with Win7 stop error 0x0000007B

Hello to all,

I'm experiencing very strange problem with Dell T5500 workstation. In my office I have a couple of identical T5500 precision workstations. I do a regular maintenance and make Acronis image regular  of each machine.

Two days ago I experienced a so called "Smart Event" on one HDD on one Dell workstation. Also Windows issued a warning that HDD is failing. I made another acronis image backup. During backups I never had any problems or warnings.

This machine had two HDDs, but RAID was not active. So I exchanged the failing HDD and simply restored acronis image. The complete process went without any problems. But when Windows started for a split of second I saw blue screen and then infinite reboot.

With F8 I have disables automatic reboot and then I saw that the error is famous 0x0000007B(0xFFFFF880009A9928, 0x0...34,0,0)

Based on what I saw on the Internet it is most likely problem with disk controller.

No settings in BIOS were changed!

No other HW except HDD is changed. Insted of Segate 500 GB, I have placed WD 500GB in the same HW.

Windows rescue CD cannot repair the startup. Windows is Win7 64 bit SP1.
I tried everything that I found on the internet (manually fix boot and mbr, change regedit keys SCSI Miniport...) but that didn't help.

I decided to try one more thing. On other working machine, I have made backup, removed HDD, put new HDD and restored a backup that I made 1 hour earlier. The result is the same. Windows cannot start with the 0x00000007B blue screen error.

I had an earlier version of Acronis (2016 and 2013) but that didn't worked either. So I just put back original HDD and completed test on this machine. This was important to know that problem is not other HW.
In the Dell BIOS all computer have default settings RAID on. I have tried to change this setting to ATA and AHCI on the machine on which there is a problem, but that didn't solve anything.

The problem still persists. Clean new install Windows 7 is not an option because I have a lot of other company programs and I'm not able to install and to configure all of them.

If I start computer with windows rescue CD it finds Windows installation and all partitions. It has all the data and when trying to repair I even enter Win Admin password. So all data are correctly restored except that maybe somehow acronis put one of its drivers that make some conflict that prevents windows to start.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Inspirion 3847 Power supply defective

My 3847 is only good 2 years old and the power supply is defective.
I have already read here in the forum, which should work a standard power supply. Before I get a new one: The 4pin Atx connector from the Dell power supply has 2 brown and 2 black cables
and not as usual 2 yellow and 2 black cables.
I'm not sure about the compatibility standards.
Is it safe to use a standard power supply?

Disabling the bootability of an internal mechanical hard drive

Recently, I was working on a Dell XPS 8910 computer owned by a family member.

The goal was to clone the original factory install boo drive to a Samsung PCI based SSD drive. The cloning was fairly simple and booting from the new SSD also worked BUT... I had to unhook the SATA cable from the original C: drive.

I tried to change the boot sequence to prioritize the SSD card but that was not possible. The UEFI interface only showed an entry named Windows Boot Manager!

I know that if I hooked up the original drive to a an external USB port that my problems would be solved but I just didn't want the extra clutter if I could avoid it.

Does anyone know of a way to simply disable the bootability of a previously bootable Windows 10 hard drive while preserving the data on it.

Also, if anyone can clarify why Windows Boot Manager is all you see in the UEFI interface screen when you have a PCI based SSD card, that would also be pretty useful. I tried scouring the web but the information available was HIGHLY confusing and unclear.

Thanks!

Inspiron 3847 crazy fan - can't update bios - bad video?

$

I have an Inspiron 3847 that must have bad onboard video.  The video is always fine during post or while viewing the bios etc but in Windows it is garbled.  I installed a graphics card which works, no garbled video but the cpu fan runs at full speed as soon as Windows load.  Another strange thing, I reloaded Windows 10 from scratch and after a few minutes (after the install) the fan was running at full speed again.  I thought maybe it was just working hard, loading drivers and updates but suddenly the video became garbled again and the fan idled down.  I assume it was when Windows automatically downloaded the video driver.

I have got drivers from the Dell support page and the all install except the Management Engine Interface, which gives the error "Platform not supported" and the same when I try to update the bios (any release).  I have tried compatibility mode as well.

I am convinced it is a hardware/gpu issue causing everything but if anyone has any suggestions to try I would gladly try it out.

Thanks!

ps. the system is clean, as far as dust.  It has barely been used and looks almost as clean as new inside

i would like to get the machine right up to Win 10 before anything else is done.

Looking for the best way to do this.

Questions about Dell XPS Special Edition Tower

$

Not ready to buy just yet, but have a few questions on the XPS Tower Special Edition:

1): Do the Dell motherboards use the Intel chipset and do they have Tantalum Capacitors ? .. Do they also provide USB3 support

2): What is the power supply rated at ? How reliable are the Dell power supplies ?

3): Can we get these with a top of the line Nvidia card ?

4): Can they be had with more than 1 Optical Drive ? (would like 2 CD/DVD/Blu-Ray) reader /writers ... What about adding support for Floppy or Firewire devices ?

Is there any chance that using say Acronis, I might be able to migrate my old Dell Dimension 8200 XP Pro install over to the new Dell and it would work (since the old is an Intel chipset) ? ... Might want to do a dual boot with XP and Win 10 so the new OS is there for when it is needed to be used.

Not too worried about an antivirus, I will provide my own. Same with license for Office

Replacing XPS 8500 motherboard

Hi, I'd like to make several upgrades to my XPS 8500 including replacing the original motherboard with an Asus H110M-A. However, I notice that the connectors for the front panel connected to the case itself is a block as opposed to individual connectors. Is it possible to connect this to the new motherboard or will I have to buy a new case?

Dell t3500:Small alum. heatsink next the CPU heatsink missing

$

There is a small aluminum heatsink that buts right against the bottom side of the CPU heatsink that is missing in my machine and others I have seen pictures of.

This is taken from one of the tech manuals, I hope the link works because I can't figure out how to upload a pic.

I wish to know what this cools and why they are never reincluded when you purchase one refurbished. The chips that are cooled by it right next to the CPU. I have heat issues and this has been bothering me because I can't find one to replace it. Or not a Dell brand anyway.

Can someone enlighten me as to what this is , why it's hard to find, what are those chips, and how do I keep them cool?

XPS8900 rebooting itself

My xps8900 desktop is rebooting itself randomly for no apparent reason.  It seemed to start this after the last Win10 update, or at least after that was the first time I noticed it.  The warranty is good for 20 more days, so the box is less than a year old. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ron

Which driver do I need

After installing a ssd I loaded win7 64 this 3650 that came with win10. Got everything running right and using the 1tb drive as storage. Anyway I seem to be missing a couple of drivers and hope someone can point me to the correct ones. Not even sure what the 3 items are at this point. Also, will installing the correct drivers mess up others?

My XPS 400 AGAIN

So I was on here a year ago or so about my XPS 400. I have since done quite a bit. It came with XP Media Center and I changed over to 7, no problem, except I still can't open my mig. files. That's not my current worry. After that I upgraded to 10...Bad plan, something happened and my computer crashed. tried lots of things and the short story is I got a new hard drive.

Now present day. I tried to put 7 on it because I like 7 best but it wouldn't install. Went ahead and put xp back on and it installed but am missing some drivers that I can't seem to find.

Currently I can't get online with it.

The ones I am missing are as follows..

PCI device, which I have come to believe is a soft modem. simple communication controller,

video controller, vga compatible, and sm bus controller. I have the numbers and everything if someone wants to help walk me thru it. I found a couple that i thought would work but couldn't get the computer to take them.

XPS 8500 Bios A12 only recognizes 6 of 12 Gb installed

Dear all,

I am new to this forum. I have a dell XPS 8500 with 12 Gb RAM installed. I have Windows 10 running (although not tested by Dell for this model). I did a BIOS upgrade from A9 to A12. My 12 Gb RAM is not recognized, only 6 Gb is being seen, also after Bios reset to default settings. The whole machine is in factory configuration as it was delivered 3 years ago.

Thank you for any suggestion to solve this issue.

BR Pieter

PS: I googled a lot but didn't came across a real solution :-(

Upgrade advice for Optiplex 755 SFF

$

Hello everyone,

I want to upgrade my Dell Optiplex 755 small form factor machine.

It currently has:

cpu:    Intel(R) Core 2 Duo E6550 – 2.33 GHz
hdd:    Seagate Barracuda 80GB ST380815AS

CPU
I read on this forum that the best validated cpu is the N652J Yorkfield, Q9650, 3.00GHz, 12MB, E0. I couldn't find this online new or secondhand. I did however find this guy selling a 775 Intel Xeon E5450 (modded), which supposedly is as fast as the Q9650, but using less power (80W vs 95W):

link.marktplaats.nl/m1119490315 (warning, Dutch language)

HDD
I am looking to replace the drive with the Samsung 850 EVO 500Gb.
- Do i need a separate bracket to mount it?
- Could I also exchange the dvd drive with the Samsung and replace the current hdd with a conventional HDD for data storage (using the SDD for the operating system, in my case Debian linux)?

GRAPHICS:
I have been reading a lot about recommended low profile graphics cards for this machine. What is the current recommendation?

POWER
Say I upgrade the cpu, drive and graphics card. Can the power supply unit on the Optiplex handle this reliably?

Looking forward to your replies.

Regards,
Bart
