Does anyone know if I can use 32 gb (4x8GB) of non-ECC ram in a Precision T1700 tower?  The spec sheet says ECC ram to is required to get 32 gb but I was thinking of getting 2x8gb now and another 2x8gb later.

Dell Optiplex 380 SFF second power button and lower led

Hi all, new here and not very technological so be gentle.

I have bought an old Optiplex 380 SFF to use for a homemade arcade cabinet project and need some wiring advice / help. Basically I want to add and illuminated arcade button to act as the power switch when the cabinet is built as the computer will be inside and not accessible.  As these computers do not have traditional headers / pins for the power switch I am stuck as how to achieve this. Looking at it I believe that the ribbon connector that connects the power audio USB front panel to the motherboard would be a good place to look, dell part number UM941. Ideally I would like to isolate the + and - for both the power switch and the power led within this ribbon. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for this part number? Or a pinout for the motherboard and the front panel? Motherboard part number is R64DJ and front panel is XW055

Thanks

DELL DIMENSION 5100 - CPU UPGRADE TO C2D E8400?

I have Dell Dimension 5100. Everything is stock, except GPU, Sound Card, and Cooler. I want to upgrade the CPU from Pentium 4 3ghz to Core 2 Duo E8400, but i have read forums and people say that the BIOS is older than E8400, so it wont recognize and accept it. I have A03 BIOS,  its released in 2006, the E8400 in 2008, but in Dell Dimension 5100 product page its says that A03 was last updated in 2011, does that mean it should recognize and accept E8400? I mean, the question is can i upgrade from P4 to C2D E8400 without upgrading the stock motherboard? Logically speaking if A03 was last updated in 2011. it should?

I am having problems removing the back cover in order to fit additional memory.

I have read the instructions from the Service manual. It says to press with the thumb in the slot at the back and then lift off the back. Ive followed these instruction but the back cover stays firmly in place.

Does anyone have any additional information that might help ?

Dell Precision T3600 Windows 7 Install problems

Dell Precision T3600

I have been trying to install Windows 7 on this machine now for two days :) I have tried numerous drivers off the support website.

This machine has two 500gb SAS drives configured with a Dell H310 SAS card.

initially I configured both drives as a raid-1 mirror, initialized both disks and set the boot options in BIOS to ata and legacy.

I then load the Windows 7 setup and has problems finding the drives. Ok I thought get the drivers to the H310 card. No matter what driver I throw at this thing it refuses to detect any hard disk.

I get a error messaged saying continue to load *signed drivers*

I have tried every driver on the Dell site, and also other suggestions with Intel drivers nothing has worked.

I get the same problem the windows installer cannot see the drives. I even unraided the configuration and same problem occurs.

This is a headache!  please is there a simple way to install windows on this heap of junk :)

Error 0xC00CE508 Net Framework

Hi,

I have been getting this message for a few days now:

“Error parsing

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\config\machine.config

Parser returned error 0xC00CE508.”

This has been causing problems because I can’t install updates and I keep getting another message saying that I need to restart my computer to repair driver errors. However, when I do, it takes around 10 minutes for it to start and all I get are more messages saying updates couldn’t be installed and errors couldn’t be fixed. The update that I can´t install is called “Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3206632).” I have tried to uninstall .NET Framework but, since I have Windows 10, all I can do is turn the features on and off, which hasn’t worked. When I open a program that I need for work, I get a message saying, “Service ‘Sdl.Desktop.Platform.Services.ILicensingService’ could not be started.” From what I’ve found on the Internet, this is also related to .Net Framework. I’ve downloaded a few repair tools but none has managed to solve the issue. I even attempted to restart my computer while keeping my files, but the operation failed and nothing was changed. What could I do to fix this?

Motherboard COM port disappeared

Recently, I needed the motherboard COM port on my Inspiron 620 64-bit, now running Windows 10.  It didn't show up in Device Manager.  I unmasked Hidden Ports, no joy.  I haven't used this port in a long time, so it may have been gone for years, but...

Checking with Dell, I was shocked to learn that the Inspiron 620 has not been tested with Windows 10, even though mine is only 4 years old.  I can only conclude that something in Windows 10 has broken the driver for this port.

What to do?

Optiplex 3240 AIO cpu fan getting slower?

$

Hi Dellers

Im using a Dell Optiplex 3240 with a skylake i3 6100 cpu.

Ive had this for about 1 month and at first the cpufan spun up to 100% when i start my pc up and then it slows down when loading windows to become silent in windows idling.

Then i started to get "Previous Fan Failure" when booting up.

Now it only spins up like 10-15% or such when booting and becomes quiet in windows.

In diagnostics it goes up to full speed, no problem.
When i go into Bios and put "Fan Override" then it runs at 100% constantly.

So its working at least.

Now im not getting the previous fan failure even though its running slower and the fan seems to be running at a very slow speed constantly as cpu temperature is at or below 40 degrees celsius. Temperature is no problem.

Is this normal behavior? If not, what do you recommend?

Dell Precision 490 Hangs after Win10 Update

Hi,

My pc which has 2 years of musical composition on it received a lengthy Microsoft Windows 10 update then restarted, and then hung on the BIOS page. I have never had any trouble with this pc before. I did a manual reboot and got to Desktop, then I noticed there was no internet connectivity. That has never happened before. I checked the dongle, it was inert. I removed the dongle and connected an ethernet cable instead, but I never regained the Desktop, all I keep getting is the 2/3 booted Bios page.

I tried booting into F12 several times but the pc completely ignores that.

Have come to a halt. I suspect the disastrous Windows 10 is at the bottom of this, Microsoft persuaded me to upgrade from Win7 a year ago, I have been regretting it ever since. I have already got rid of Win 10 from my laptop which 10 was ruining - the posts will be on this forum under XPS.

Help please, at end of wits. Will consider going over to Mac if Windows 10 has ruined my DAW, enough is enough.

Dell Precision 490: Revert to Windows 7?

Hi,

My Precision 490 is frozen into an abortive Microsoft Windows 10 update & hangs in mid boot, I cannot boot into F2 or F12 from restart.

I have ordered an OEM Windows 7 disc for clean install.

Presumably, I will have to remove the entire C Drive and replace it with a blank drive to load Windows 7, because the current C Drive has been frozen by Windows 10?

Possibly also if I load the old C drive as slave then I can salvage all the data on the old C drive, when I have the new master drive formatted to Windows 7?

Advice please.

Thanks,

KR

The XPS GEN5 challenge - Round 2

Round about a year ago I received some great help reinstalling the OS after a hard drive replace. Looks like member RoHe saved me that time.

Now I've gone and pressed my luck once again and tried to increase the 2 x 1gb ram with 2 x 2gb ram from crucial. I got past  the errors for not having the ram inserted fully but now what I get is:

1, I see the dell logo and what looks like a graph of the os loading up.

2, dell logo is replaced by the windows screen for just an instant.

3, then the screen is black although I can hear the hard drive being read as OS gets loaded

4, then all is quite. Machine appears to be up but nothing on the screen, no error codes.

5, I've tried to bring the machine up with just one 2GB memory inserted into bay 1 but nothing seems to change

6, Worst part is I've tried to reinstall the original 2 x 1GB ram and machine still does not come up to be usable

Anyone have any suggestions, HELP, Even if I return the ram to crucial I'm still out a machine since it will not start up with the old ram installed. Oh yeah, still running the old XP OS, should be 64 bit I think but never online any more. Just used for dvd/cd playback, home movie edit and pictures mostly.

Greetings,

I would like to upgrade my Precision T1700 graphic capacity.

I was wondering whether it could be possible to simply add a new graphic card and keeping the present one.

I have Nvidia Quadro K600 1GB installed and I am inclined to buy a 4GB Nvidia Quadro K2200.

I would be mostly thankful for the precise and precious advice.

Thank you in advance.

Bluetooth headphones won't reconnect to XPS 8900

$

I just bought a pair of Bose QC35 bluetooth headphones and although I can get them to connect and play sound on the first try, I cannot reconnect them and get sound afterwards. The system is an XPS 8900 bought last year running Windows 10 64bit. Even stranger, when I turn bluetooth on through the Windows settings, it tries to reconnect even though I haven't turned the headphones on.

I have an older XPS 8500 that was able to connect to the headphones just fine and reconnect without any problems.

The only way I can get the headphones to work again with the XPS 8900 is if I uninstall the headphones and then restart the computer.

I have updated the bluetooth drivers and gone though other troubleshooting. It's just strange that on my older system the headphones work flawlessly. Makes me wonder if there is some bloatware like Dell Audio screwing things up.

Thanks for any help!
