xps 8700 no boot device available

Someone please help if you can

I have a ~2 year old xps 8700. originally purchased with Win 8.1, free upgrade to Win 10. It has been running fine until about 2 weeks ago.

Starting getting a "no boot device available" message followed by SATA messages.

If I run diagnostics - they run without any errors.

What makes it really interesting is that if i pull the power cord to the case and then plug it back in, the machine then boots just fine. It runs for a few days and then fails to boot again with the same message - no boot device available.

I saw an old post about a corrupt bios?

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

XPS8700 SSD issue

I have an XPS8700, Win7. It has an Intel SRT 32GB SSD cache. The SSD started acting weird a while back, but I ignored it since the system still worked. Lately it's getting very sluggish and long reboot times (reboot, get coffee, come back, wait more...). When running the Dell diagnostics, I get an "incorrect media" for the Random Seek Test. I also don't recall the drive (SSD) being recognized during startup, or visible once booted.

So, any advice on whether this is a SW or HW issue? I'm not sure what Dell loads on the SSD drive, so I assume I can't just replace the drive.

Dell wanted a pretty penny (~20% of the original price of the entire system) to help since it's no longer on support, so I thought I'd try here first.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thx.

Dell Optiplex 160L - How to convert from Korean OS to English

I picked up the desktop off the sidewalk and fired it up. It works, but it's in Korean.

Is there a 'pictorial' or video explanation of how to convert the operating system to show everything in English? I ask for pictorial because if someone says "go to control panel, and click on X" I can't do that, because none of the folder names appear in English

Thanks guys

Re-installing OS with Dell OS disk

I am working on my friend's Dell XPS 8300 system with Windows 7 Pro.

The OS is farkled. After 4.5 years of flogging it has developed several problems and struggles to run for very long without hanging or crashing. I suspect some hardware issues as well.

I want to install a Samsung 850 EVO SSD and I want to install the OS on the SSD. I also just installed a very nice new power supply (Corsair RM 650x, a tight fit) and will be trying to install my old Radeon HD 7950 video card too.

My friend has his original disks, including the one marked "Operating System, Win 7 Pro, already installed".

Am I going to be able to install this OS on the SSD without the original hard drive present?

Or does the old HD have to be there so MS recognizes the validity of the OS?

Or does MS recognize the motherboard?

Or is it just a matter of inputting the CoA activation code to activate the new installation of Windows?

The case does have a normal-looking CoA keycode sticker.

Also, does this Del-branded Windows OS disk also install the Dell bloatware? If so, is there an opt-out clicky during installation?

Inspiron 3847 Questions

I have two questions about the Inspiron 3847:

1. I recently changed my CPU and now I'm getting higher CPU temperatures. I'm using the Dell CPU cooler. Can the Dell cooler be replaced with an aftermarket cooler?

2. I'm thinking about upgrading my GPU to a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 1060. Would the GTX 1060 fit in the case? The card I'm asking about is 8.8 inches, here's a link to it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125906

Reloading windows 8.1 from recovery media not recognizing COA in Bios

We recently purchased a used dell Inspiron 660 from a computer
recycler. They had removed the hard drive. We have replaced the hard drive. We got
a Dell Windows 8.1 recovery media for windows 8.1 products 64 bit DVD on Ebay. It
has PN JDNFT on the DVD and PN ORGH4G on the label on the sleeve seal. When
beginning to reload Windows with this DVD it does not automatically find the COA in
the Bios and it asks for a COA Key. I used an utility and found the Bios key. I tried
manually entering this key and it says that it is an invalid key. Do I have the incorrect recovery disk, or is there another problem? Windows 8 label indicates that the computer originally had window 8 (not pro).

Cant legacy boot any OS or installer

$

I have two Dell Inspiron 3250 that are a month old. They are both set to legacy boot and I can boot Win7, Win10, MSDART, etc without issue. I just ordered an identical system and setup the BIOS/UEFI exactly the same as the other systems. The new box crashes when I try to legacy boot anything including the Win 10 install DVD and bootable MSDART thumb drive and even the hard drive from one of the working systems (all work perfectly on the other 2 systems). I can boot/install under UEFI boot, but I want to use legacy. The only difference between the new system and the 2 old is the BIOS version (old is 2.4.2, new is 3.3.6)

I tried to downgrade the BIOS with the Windows utility and also a DOS bootable utility. Both methods report that the BIOS is locked.

I talked to Dell tech support and they informed me that the BIOS cant be upgrades/downgraded on that system which makes no sense to me. He also said that 3.3.6 doesnt support legace boot, which also makes no sense and legacy boot is clearly still an option that can be chosen

I also tried the RAM from one of the other computers just to be sure it wasn't an issue.
The BSOD I get when booting Win10 install DVD, or with the Working Win10 install from the other computer is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Can anyone shed some light on what is happening here with legacy boot, and why I cant up/down grade BIOS.

Thanks

Dell Inspiron 3656 Gaming performance issue

$

I recently purchased the 3656 desktop with the AMD A10 8700P, Radeon R9 360, 8GB (Single channel?) RAM.  Tried loading GTA V on it. Even at lowest graphics settings this game has major problems keeping up with the game.  Is there anything I can do to this PC to get the game playable? I understand this is most likely a processor issue from what I have read...

Obviously, I am very new to this, sorry if these are very bad questions.

If I upgrade the RAM to 16GB with 2 separate 8GB cards will that 1) help and 2) be dual channel?

The RAM is DDR3L, which I guess runs at lower voltage.

The processor says it is 1.8GZH but maxes out at 3.3 in turbo boost.  I set my PC to high performance and still had same issues on GTA V.  FPS were between 20-40.

Am I SOL with this box? CPU cannot be replaced from what I read too.

I am thinking I got what I paid for, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kinda got suckered into the "Gaming Computer" advertisement of this machine and the video card was better than the one in the pc at Best Buy for $200 more.

Thanks.

Wake On Lan (WOL) not working on Dell precision tower 5810 with Intel ethernet server adapter i210-t1 at first power up / after no power

Hi there,

We've got 3 Dell precision towers 5810 that work great, except for a possible bios bug, which I can reproduce on all machines:

I'm using the installed NIC: Intel ethernet server adapter i210-t1.

Our computers go powerless every night (mains power) after a normal pc shutdown. Every morning, when the power is back on, I want to wake up all computers in our building with Wake On Lan (WOL) by sending a 'magic packet' over the network.

This normally works well if the machine has been switched on and off with the power button / windows shutdown. But when I unplug the machine (mains power), wait and plug in the mains power again, the computer does not respond to the WOL packet. (Maybe the PCI-E NIC does not get power on plugging in the mains of machine for the first time).

It works well on the integrated (motherboard) NIC. BIOS / power / sleep state settings seem to be ok.

We replace the existing power supply (model no. L305P-01) with a new power supply (model no. N305P-06) and the computer will come on put we are not getting a signal to the monitor.  Are the two power supplies similar?  Really not sure where to go next and any help/direction would be appreciated.

Precision T7600, Hard drive not detected by Windows installer

Hey there everyone,

I recently had to install a new Hard Drive in my Dell T7600 Workstation, however once I did so when I went to install Win7 Home Premium back on it the drive cannot be detected whatsoever. The Drive is the same as its predecessor a 1TB Seagate Barracuda. I am not setting the drive up in RAID, I've been all over the forums to try to self-solve this issue but keep getting no where. The drive is fully seated and powered on. I know it is a good drive because I removed it and it mounted just fine on my other Dell.

I attempted to follow this article for help and it was not successful:

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19535287

Same with this Article:

en.community.dell.com/.../19508873

I feel like I have downloaded every driver under the sun, and each time I get the error "No Signed device drivers were found..." on the Load Drivers screen under the Win7 installer.

Any help is much appreciated.

SYSTEM INFORMATION:
BIOS Version=A09
SATA-0 = DVD +/-RW
SATA-1= {none}
Processor: Intel Xeon CPU E5-2630 0 @2.30GHz

Currently I have the CD/DVD Drive set as the first boot option in order to install Win7 followed by the SAS_0_0:ST2000DM001-1CH164 (HDD), USB Storage Device, Onboard NIC, and Diskette Drive.

Boot Option is LEGACY, and not UEFI
AHCI Operation is set to ATA
SATA/RAID Operation is ENABLED

Thank you!

Optiplex 3040 - Numlock does not stay on after boot

$

I have just configured an Optiplex 3040 for a customer to run Virtual XP machines for his CNC mills.

I upgraded from windows 7 Professional to Windows 10 64 Bit Pro as the replacement CAD/CAM software he is trialling needs this 64 bit OS.

Apart from a lot of research to find out why I couldn't boot from the Windows 10 DVD media to install Windows 10 (not included in the Dell FAQs) everything runs OK. However there is one niggle in that on boot the Numlock doesn't stay on.

I have checked the bios and the relevant setting in the Post section is ticked and the Numlock LED comes on during Post but then goes off as Windows 10 loads. This is not a big problem but rather annoying as the customer uses the numeric keyboard a lot for data entry of measurements.

Is this a bug in the Dell Bios or is it something to do with UEFI?

Many thanks

Fozzie

Dell Studio XPS 8500 GPU upgrade

Hi, so I've been wanting to upgrade my graphics processor for a while, so I bought the RX 480 from Radeon along with a better supply and while the power supply worked fine, the graphics processor did not work and on testing on another friend's better computer, we concluded that the gpu was faulty, and should be returned.

During my search for why the problem on the gpu could be occurring, I came across some people who said that the motherboard or cpu couldn't support the new graphics card. With that in mind I am wondering if a (fully functioning) rx 480 will work in my cpu, and if not what is the recommended gpu for someone who wants to upgrade but is also on a budget.

Thanks.

Thanks for your help.
